This week, I’m sharing insights on collaborative governance for partnerships on the path to a circular economy in the retail/textile sectors.🌍

Last week, I provided an overview of textile/fashion stakeholders & those who participated in my research here: https://lnkd.in/gSXnsqd6. This week, I’m establishing what collaborative governance means in order to set the stage for future discussion.🌱

Collaborative governance involves processes and structures that unite stakeholders—government, businesses, civil society, and citizens—to tackle complex issues. Cross-sector collaboration is the talk of the town in sustainability, but collaborative governance is not specifically discussed because it has not been used in fashion… yet. (FYI: The areas it's usually applied to include: environment, healthcare, urban planning, education, agriculture, and energy).🤝

Within collaborative governance, we have ‘collaborative governance regimes, which are frameworks that help sustain collaboration over time using norms and practices that provide the foundation for an initiative to be built. They guide stakeholder interactions, decision-making, and resource management. (See attached illustration I made).☂️

In transitioning the textile and fashion industries to a circular economy, collaborative governance and regimes are vital. It emphasizes shared responsibility and collective action to promote efficient, less wasteful practices that benefit people and the planet. However, few are leveraging this framework to shape policies and initiatives.🧵

I suggest we all adopt the collaborative governance regimes framework in the for-profit sector to align our goals and navigate the greater complexities of cross-sector initiatives. This approach fosters clarity and successes that can be scaled, integrating the specifics around collaboration into our strategies as a core component rather than an afterthought.🏢

As someone dedicated to transparent communication, I invite you to join this conversation and share your experience related to this topic. If you’re reserved, feel free to reach out to me directly to share.🔍

Look forward to more insights every Tuesday and Thursday! Next, I’ll discuss why the Netherlands is a key player in the U.S. sustainability landscape and why you (U.S. brands) should be collaborating with Dutch stakeholders.🇳🇱
